James ‘Jez’ Barr joined the band only months after we started. He was compare at a fete we played in Felmingham in 2001. It started raining heavily and we moved into the beer tent and that’s when the party started. Jez rushed home to grab his guitar and we had a hell of a time. Jez played with The Ugly Dog Skiffle Combo for 11 years. I think he only missed one gig in that time. He was amazing. He’d play any style, any instrument, any place, any time. One of the greatest musicians and entertainers I’d ever met. Jez died suddenly towards the end of 2011. His wife asked us to play a tribute party for him and invite everyone from his musical life as well as friends and family. Dozens of musicians turned up to pay their respect ( and play their respect! ) with 8 bands playing and countless others making guest appearance including James’ son playing the blues. When Jez died it felt as if the spirit of the band itself had died and The Ugly Dog Skiffle Combo stopped performing for year although we are now starting to play a few gigs once again.
Jez doing what he done best!
